Making Room for Wonder
Friend, can I be honest with you?
Somewhere between the holiday parties, gift lists, crowded stores, and nightly “don’t forget to move the elf”… it gets really easy to miss the wonder of Christmas.
Not the Pinterest kind.
Not the perfectly curated kind.
The holy kind.
The kind that catches your breath.
The kind that reminds you that God stepped into the world quietly, humbly, and with a love deeper than anything we could ever manufacture with cookies, crafts, or matching pajamas.
And if you're anything like me, you probably feel a tug this year, a desire to slow down just enough to see what you’ve been rushing past.
Because wonder isn’t found in bigger plans or better decorations.
Wonder lives in the small, simple moments where our hearts make room for Jesus.
Why We Lose Our Sense of Wonder
As moms, we’re often the carriers of Christmas — the planners, the rememberers, the magic-makers. And while we love doing it, the weight of it sometimes squeezes out our capacity to notice God’s presence right in front of us.
We lose wonder when:
Our schedules are too full
Our minds are too scattered
Our hearts are too overwhelmed to see clearly
We're trying so hard to create joy that we forget to experience it
But the beautiful thing is this: wonder doesn’t demand anything extravagant from us.
It just asks us to pause long enough to see what God is doing.
Simple Ways to Bring Back the Awe
These aren’t big projects or complicated traditions. They’re tiny openings for your heart, and your family’s hearts, to reencounter Jesus.
1. Step outside and look up
The night Jesus was born, the sky itself announced His arrival.
A few minutes under the stars can soften a hurried heart in ways we forget to expect.
2. Read the Christmas story slowly
Not to check a box.
Not as a lesson.
But as a moment to really imagine the wonder of God choosing to come near.
Pick one phrase to sit with.
Immanuel. God with us.
3. Watch your children
Kids don’t rush wonder.
They receive it.
Notice their faces. Their awe. Their joy.
Let it remind you of a childlike faith that Jesus invites us into.
4. Light a candle and breathe a prayer
A small flame in a quiet room can feel like a holy pause in a loud season.
“Jesus, I want to see You this Christmas. Open my eyes.”
5. Create one moment of stillness each day
It doesn’t have to look perfect.
It doesn’t have to be long.
Just one intentional pause where your heart says, “I’m here, Lord.”
Wonder Isn’t Something You Create. It's Something You Notice
Sometimes the most sacred moments of Christmas aren’t planned at all.
A whispered prayer before the kids wake up.
A soft snowfall.
A worship song that hits your heart differently this year.
A quiet car ride where you finally exhale.
These are the places where God meets you. Right where you are, right in the middle of the beautiful, chaotic, ordinary life you're living.
And friend, He delights in showing Himself to you.
